I remember back in eighth grade when we were at a sleepover. We were playing truth or dare and the question we kept getting was, "what is the farthest you've gone with a boy?" I couldn't believe what my friends were saying. Most said they were having oral sex (though, I kinda felt some were lying). But my best friend, Alex, was so descriptive about the sex she had with her boyfriend that we all just sat silent. Sweet, bashful Alex! Then, the stories got intense. There was one girl who said she liked two guys at once. Another said she was having an affair with a 23-year old man. When I was asked, I felt very comfortable saying I've never even been kissed and didn't plan on having sex until I was married. Immediately, they assumed I needed help meeting boys and started scheming on "setting me up." Alex said, "You're so pretty, Nicole. Guys would kill to date you." She thought she was complimenting me, but I was pretty mad that everyone was treating me like a freak because I intended on remaining a virgin.

It's funny how a year or so later, we were all virgins again. While most of those same girls are now trying to shake off bad reps (yes, word travels fast in our school!), I never have to deal with the rumors about my sexual activity or the STD's and pregnancy scares either. Sex is not a truth or dare game and we're not little girls seeking thrills. If you really want love and respect from guys, love and respect yourself first.
